Match Report
I suppose that the golfing gods may have their revenge for this observation or, alternatively, they may accept it as their just reward, but the Region has been very fortunate with the weather in its matches this year. The East Midlands hosted us at Kedleston Park Golf Club for this year’s fixture and the sun shone on us in more ways than one.
The hosts wanted to field a larger team this year and we obliged so that two teams of sixteen faced each other which was a pleasure as it meant that there was an even greater opportunity to meet old friends as well as new ones.
This is, after all, one of the purposes of the inter-regional matches in that they emphasise the value of the Association which goes much further than just being a training facilitator. At a time when an increasing number of managers do not play the game, and other organisations seem bent on encroaching on the GCMA’s patch, comradeship and fun on the course is something that we can offer.
Kedleston Park is a parkland course located in the grounds of the stately home of the same name and the course offered some fine views of the home of the Curzon family now operated by the National Trust. The course was in excellent condition and the front nine, in particular, offered a fine variety of holes with water being a feature on more than one occasion. The results of the match appear above but one hopes that the competitive example set by the ‘old lags’ of Durkin, Hadley, Turner, and others of us, will serve to encourage the Captain and Secretary (Regional Manager) in the Region’s next encounter.
Alas after that last sentence I may well not be there to witness it!
Bob Fletcher - Regional Scribe
Regional Manager's observations - much thought was given to the pairings for this match bearing in mind that the opposition fielded two ex-pro's amongst their numbers. Messrs Durkin and Hadley were entrusted with the responsibility of leading the team, and also of taking on the daunting task of playing the two pro's. My faith in them was rewarded as you can see from the results above, along with wins for most other pairings. The fact that the Captain and myself came second in our matches, was, fortunately, inconsequential to the overall result, but Mr Fletcher can rest assured that neither of use will bear a grudge against him in future selection.
It is however, fairly safe to say that he will be paired with one of us for the next encounter and will be there to witness a memorable victory!
Rob Wormstone - Regional Manager
