Match report
Yet again the weather Gods were on our side, but an appearance by the God of cool breezes would have been greatly appreciated, English cloudy, still afternoons have a tendency to become rather sticky affairs.
Nonetheless, we fielded (very nearly) a full squad, including four working managers, who's presence was greatly appreciated, and I believe they enjoyed the good old cameraderie generated by these encounters. We have to thank the opposition for allowing their extra man to change his spots and become an honorary GCMA member for the afternoon, following the intervention of gremlins on my landline voicemail. Sadly Hugh Durkiin was unable to attend due to a family bereavement, so we arrived with 11 players. Our thanks go to Amrit Singh for steping in at the last minute.
This was the first time I had been to Oswestry since the development of the new clubhouse some eight years ago, and what a pleasant surprise it was. The new building is a fine example of a modern purpose build clubhouse, and everyone we encountered from the pro-shop staff through to the evening waiting staff were extremely pleasant and efficient, a credit to the club. Catering, both lunch and dinner were excellent, with late dietary requirements handled with no hesitation whatsoever. Oswestry will be on our 'let's visit again' list for matches in the coming years.
The result, as always, is pretty academic really, because the principle objective of this match has always been to enjoy the opportunity to speak with past and present club Captains, and appreciate their perspective on the role of club managers. I'm sure our four working managers may have found some of the views "enlightening" to say the least. But as ever there are winners and losers, and on this occasion GCMA Midland Region ran out comfortable winners with a 4-2 victory.
