April 2019 News Letter

The home hole at South Staffs Golf Club

This month’s little homily comes from the pen of Alistair Cooke who most readers will remember from his Letter from America series. Cooke became a golf addict later in life:

Golfers are a special kind of moral realist who nip the normal romantic and idealistic yearnings in the bud by proving once or twice a week that life is unconquerable but endurable. For the golfer compresses into a few hours all the emotions he spreads over the rest of his life: hope, envy, betrayal, self-discipline, self-deceit, the Holy Grail in view, the Grail smartly whipped out of sight.

Forthcoming Events:-

01 May - The first match of the season against the South West Region at Clevedon Golf

Club BS21 7AA. ‘laid out on luscious verdant parkland on a cliff top, and with

superb views over the Severn Estuary’ (English Golf Courses). At the moment we

have a team of twelve but it would be comfortable to have a reserve prepared to

play. If you could be available please contact Tom Duke, Hugh Durkin or Bob

                Fletcher.

17 May - The Spring Meeting will now be held at Druids Heath Golf Club and will follow the

conventional pattern with a business meeting being held in the morning followed

by golf after lunch. The morning session will be particularly useful for Managers/

Course Managers and Head Greenkeepers as the subjects will include

sustainability on the course, fertilisers and the alternatives. Toro may well be

making a return appearance as will Fairway Credit.

23 May - Match against the London and Home Counties Region at Temple Golf Club.

               (Henley Rd., Hurley, Berks. SL6 5LH    01628-824795)

The course, laid out by Willie Park Jnr., is built on land that was once owned by

the Knights Templar. The course is on chalk downland and offers views over

Marlow and the Thames Valley. The late Sir Henry Cotton was appointed Club

Professional in 1954. A lovely place to visit and to golf. 'Highly recommended'.

We have not yet got a full side for this match so some volunteers are needed.
