The 14th hole at Trentham Golf Club
The first match of the season took place against the South-West region at Clevedon Golf Club on Wednesday 1 May. After some uncertainty over the weather and after at least one round trip of the town by one pair, the team assembled in good order for the game. Clevedon Golf Club offers some atmospheric views across the Bristol Channel to South Wales along with some excellent greens in prime condition for the new season.
The turf allows all types of shot and some of the elevations are quite dramatic. Of course uphill tees to downhill greens requires the reverse sooner or later and it is a reasonable supposition that golfers who play this course regularly are fit, or avail themselves of one of the Club’s fleet of buggies! The evening meal was excellent, served as it was, in a dining-room with views over the course. Compliments to the staff and to Reece Miller for his impeccable arrangements. A nearest the pin competition was organised on the 14th green and it was won by a svelte Neil Dunkley, last year’s Regional Captain. The result of the match was a half, 3 - 3, as they say, a fair result!
Neil Dunkley receives his prize for nearest the pin, Alan Banks contemplates what might have been and the sun shines through the window on all three.
Spring Meeting 2019 - Druids Heath Golf Club Friday 17 May.
The meeting’s agenda was as advertised with the emphasis being on course preparation with sustainable fertilisers and mowing economics. All present found the presentations to be useful. The afternoon’s golf was won by the ‘evergreen’ John Cox with 33 Stableford points followed by Jerry Duffy and Tony Moon on 32 points. Tony Moon (Copt Heath G.C) and Craig Brown (Kidderminster G.C.), both serving managers, will be representing the Region in the Fairway Credit Finals to be held at the Oxfordshire in September. Congratulations are due to them and we hope that they will be able to repeat the success of the Region’s representatives in this event in 2017. We will all be watching!
FUTURE EVENTS:-
National Golf Day - Enville Golf Club Monday 10 June.
An additional starter is needed for this event and if anyone from the Region could volunteer to help, Headquarters would be very grateful.
The Next Match of the Season is at Mickleover Golf Club against the Yorkshire Region on Thursday 20 June 2019. The Match Manager will be Hugh Durkin. At the moment we have a full side but, as usual, anyone offering to be a reserve will be welcomed.
Regional Captain’s Invitation Day will be held at South Staffs Golf Club on 27 June 2019. A number of imaginative prizes are promised and the Club Professional, Peter Baker, Ryder Cup player, European Tour member and currently a Senior Tour member will be a guest speaker at the dinner after the event.
The Regional Autumn Meeting will be held at Copt Heath Golf Club on Wednesday 25 September 2019. Please support us and help to turn the day into a rousing success.
Enville Golf Club has been offered for the Spring Meeting in 2020 and the date will be announced shortly.
COMPETITION CORNER
The talents of our members knows no bounds and Peter Turner was the first to submit the correct answer to last month’s photograph of Francesco Molinari. (Three Pro Vl golf balls to you Peter). Clearly you all need a more formidable challenge (incidentally if a correct answer is not received by the editor it is perhaps worth pointing out that he plays Pro Vl )
A small hint for this month’s challenge - the golfer pictured above is American and is not a member of the Senior Tour. I hope that narrows the field for you!
Best of luck
